Choral Arts Initiative is excited to announce the newest addition to our growing family, Lorraine Joy Welling.
Lorraine began singing professionally at the age of 12 as a wedding soloist and cantor in the Catholic church. As a young adult, she had the opportunity to perform with Sir David Willcocks as a choral singer and soloist. She continued her passion for singing by obtaining her degree in Vocal Performance at California State University, Fullerton. Since then, Lorraine has been featured as a soloist in several European tours, local performances and premieres, at the Hollywood Bowl and the Baroque Music Festival in Corona del Mar, and on two recordings (“Shenandoah” and “Frank Ticheli: The Shore and Other Choral Works”). Lorraine then continued her music education by attending the University of California, Irvine where she received her MFA in Vocal Performance and Teaching Credential in Music. She was awarded the Leo Freedman Fellowship and the Medici Scholars Award, as well as other fellowship awards from the departments of music and education.
Lorraine has a long-standing career in the arts and education. In 2002 she joined the Pacific Chorale and John Alexander Singers as a staff member. During her time at UCI she worked as a teaching assistant for the choral program and became a private voice instructor and substitute choral teacher. She also worked at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center teaching in the choral outreach programs. In 2011, Lorraine was hired at Buena Park High School to build their choral program. Currently in her fourth year at BPHS, her choirs have received superior ratings at festivals, acclaim and recognition from colleges and the Orange County Register, and invitations to perform for events in the local community throughout Southern California.
Choral Arts Initiative is happy to bring Lorraine into the family and utilize her many skills and talents to help this organization grow. When asked about her appointment onto the Board of Directors, Lorraine commented that she is “excited to begin a new chapter of her professional career as part of Choral Arts Initiative.”
