Jeffrey Derus, Choral Artist and member of the Board of Directors, is receiving the World Premiere of his new composition, "Were the World Mine." When asked about the upcoming premiere, Jeff shared his perspective of the connections between him, CAI, and his music:
"Choral Arts Initiative is my musical family. When presented with the opportunity to write a newly commissioned choral work for CAI, I felt honored. I experience great joy and love singing with the Artists in this ensemble, and am humbled to compose the music that will inspire that joy and love. I am indebted to Brandon and my fellow artists for everything they have given me musically and personally. 'Were The World Mine' is a compassionate poem about the lengths a person would take in order to express their love for another. Kevin Norman captures the world and all its beauty through each change that person would make in order to create a more perfect existence for the one they love. This is expressed in the music by highlighting each section of the choir with new melodic material paired with each change. The voices of Choral Arts Initiative are vibrant and sensitive with their artistry and singing. I am captivated each time we rehearse the piece and am overjoyed to collaborate with author Kevin Norman, artistic director Brandon Elliott, and to be a part of the world premiere of 'Were the World Mine.'"
Born in California, Jeffrey’s major compositional influences come from the stunning array of natural landscapes throughout the Western Coastline. As a professional choral artist, he has sung with the LA Philharmonic Symphonic Chorus, Pacific Symphony Chorus, Pacific Chorale and Choral Arts Initiative. Jeffrey holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Choral Music Education and Choral Conducting from California State University Fullerton. He studied voice with Dr. Mark Goodrich, choral conducting with Dr. Robert Istad and Dr. Geoffrey Boers, music education with Dr. Chris Peterson, and composition with Dr. Pamela Madsen. Upon graduation, Jeffrey’s passion for inspiring young musicians led him to further studies in CSUF’s Secondary Music Education Credential Program. Between his other musical endeavors, Jeffrey continues to receive commissions for new choral and vocal works in the Southern California area.
